National Pantheon of Heroes and Oratory of Our Lady Saint Mary of the Assumption

The National Pantheon of Heroes and Oratory of Our Lady Saint Mary of the Assumption is an icon of the Paraguayan capital located in the heart of downtown Asunción, at the corner of Palma and Chile streets. This true architectural gem of immense artistic and cultural value was declared a National Historic Heritage. President Francisco Solano López ordered the construction of the Oratory of the Virgin of the Assumption in October 1863. Designed by Italian architect Alejandro Ravizza, its construction began in 1863, stalled due to the War of the Triple Alliance, and was only completed in 1936. By presidential decree, it was designated as the National Pantheon of Heroes in that same year. Within its walls lie the mortal remains of heroes of Paraguayan history such as Marshal Francisco Solano López. The Latin inscription found on the front of the pantheon, "Fides et Patria," translates to "Faith and Country."
